  HISTORY OF  Indian Institute of Advance Studies   (iias shimla)

Indian institute of advanced studies (IIAS) is a research institute based in Shimla. Also known as Viceregal Lodge or 'Rashtrapati Nivas'. From 1823 onwards for some six decades the Governors and later Viceroys of India had shuttled from one unsuitable residence to another during their summer sajourns in Shimla. It was Lord Lytton (1876-80) who chose observatory Hill for constructing the building. When the Viceregal Estate passed into the hands of the President of India after 1947, the spectacular building was renamed as 'Rashtrapati Niwas'. In 1964 it was set up by the ministry of Education,government of India as the Indian Institute of Advanced studies. And it started functioning from 20 Oct. 1965. It  research for Indian culture, region, humanities, social and nature science. It is about 4 km. from the old bus stand Shimla on Summer Hill road. Entry fee is 40 rps. per person for Indian citizens, 85 rps. per person for foreigners and 20 rps. per person for garden visit. The timing is 9am - 5pm. There is a beautiful drawing room, a dining hall and a magnificent ballroom in the interior. The garden and lawns around the premises. A well-stocked museum is also located within the campus. There are so many other places near IIAS that can also be visited. Like there is Manorville Mansion Shimla where Gandhi ji stayed from 1935 to 46, Kamna Devi temple, Annandale ground, Summer Hill etc. There is a large collection of IIAS research books.
